Decked Out 2017 @ the Bond: Novemember 10th 6-9pm

For 6 years The Parliment Arts Organization has hosted the Decked Out, the skate deck art auction benefit. On November 10th at the Bond, 134 E. King St. York Pennsylvania this years event will be hosted. With over 100+ artists and decks up for bid, the show promises to be packed with talent. For the entrance fee of $5, participants will be able to enjoy art, beer tasting and food trucks. Bids on the boards start at $50, proceeds to benefit participating artists, The Parliament Arts Organization and Reid Menzer Skatepark.

Title: The "Howler"

Artist Statement:

The growler became a staple for American beer drinkers starting sometime in the late 1800's. From its humble beginning as a galvanized pail whose name possibly originates from the noisy "growls" that were heard as the Co2 would escaped the pail lid as the beer went sloshing along its way from the local pub. Pre-WWII it was not unusual to see children or adults known as“Bucket Boys” carrying the buckets to "rush the growler", another possible origin of the term, for workers or their parents during lunch or dinner. The "bucket trade" was not looked favorable on during prohibition, and many laws were passed to outlaw it. During the 1950's the pail was replace by the new innovations of a waxed cardboard container that resembled a cross of a milk carton and Chinese take out soup container that could be purchased to go from the brewery. The growler about disappeared during the 1960's when plastic made its debut and it was possible to package beer for after hours sales. The growler was little heard of until a craft brewery in the late 1980's was looking for a way to provide beer to its patrons but was lacking a way to bottle it. They turned to the idea of using a growler, a concept remembered by a family member from his youth. The re-imagined growler was a glass half gallon jug with a screen printed logo, as is most commonly seen today. The growler is continuing to gain popularity as it neatly fits into our idea of a home grown locally sourced brew kept within a reusable container. There are a variety of screw or pop top vessels available that allow us to enjoy a fresh beer at home for about a week. The inspiration for this artwork came from my own flint glass "howler" or "half growler" with a Grolsch-style flip-top. Depicted is a refreshing Belgian wheat beer sourced from my local brewery and enjoyed in my studio as this was being painted.

Somebunny....

The Somebunny Project

If you have bothered living a little in this life you know the good moments will come and go, and matters of the heart can be no small potato. Life has no qualms with offering each of us challenges that push our limits, and in those times, often a kind word or something worth smiling about means the world. The "somebunny" project was brought about after going through my own considerable life challenges in 2015. As I begin to rebuild following the upsets of these events, I felt it was important to find a way to reach out to those in my community with a lighthearted an positive message. The project was kicked off on 2/13/16 @ Lancaster Central Market were various cards were placed randomly throughout the space for anyone to happen upon, and pick up to take as a "Valentine" meant for them.  There was something charming about placing that message in unexpected places waiting for "somebunny" to happen upon it. It takes each one of us to remember and take the time to give "somebunny" a moment of kindness, even if its as simple as a smile and a hello.  Somebunny is glad you took the time to notice these little things....  so if you have a moment to spare, I welcome you to share your own "tails" in the comments below on how somebunny reached out to you, and remember to pass it along!

"Skinned Knees and Other Stories," features works that in some way capture the colorful, kinetic energy, the diligence and gritted teeth, the skinned knees, bruises, blood, sweat and tears, and the shadowy underbelly of urban subculture and entertainment. Artworks can be made using the subject matter, styles, and even physical parts/materials of urban subcultures such as (but not limited to) skateboarding, tattoo, graffiti, roller derby, custom cars & bicycles, street performance, etc. Plus you will get a sneak peek at some of the artists' skate deck creations for next month's "Decked Out" Skate Deck Auction at The Bond of York to benefit Reid Menzer Skate Park.

The Opening Reception for the exhibit on First Friday Sept 4 from 6-9pm, as part of the Trunks & Trucks First Friday in Royal Square with bands, food trucks and more! Inside the gallery: In celebration of York City's Boutique Week, we will be hosting a trunk show for Paper and Plush, a collaborative creative endeavor by the very talented Em White and Ashley Boyer, while you enjoy craft beer tastings by The Beer Ace. Out in front of the gallery: You will find the charismatic Jim Hively and his hand silk-screened retro fashions and neato art, plus gain some insight with Liette Monic York's Urban Shaman. This event is free and open to the public!

OCT 17 Decked Out // 3rd Annual Skate Deck Auction and Art Show

“Decked Out” is a collaborative art exhibit/fundraiser showcasing 6 Central Pennsylvania art galleries in the name of banding our local artist communities together.

The event will include a one-night-only art exhibit, with all pieces being auctioned off. 6 art galleries are collaborating together to display over 150 hand painted, collaged, and manipulated skate decks that will be auctioned off.

All proceeds will benefit the participating art galleries and Reid Menzer Memorial Skate Park.

Seenscene altartfest HBG

Artist Meisa Chase will be live painting at this event. She recently broke her clavicle and had surgery to repair it.  She will be painting despite still being in the recovery phase and only having one good arm (thankfully her painting arm was spared in the calamity). She invites all who come join at the event to take a selfie with her to celebrate making art in spite of life's adversities!

The details:
On August 30th from noon until 9pm the SEENSCENE Artists Group of Harrisburg will take over a street in our fair city. The event entitled “altARTFEST” will feature veteran “outsider artists” as well and new up and comers. The event will take place on North 10th Street between State St and Walnut St (Behind the ABC Brewery on Cameron St). Music will continue throughout the event with local dj’s, solo artists and more.

Toward the evening DJ Soulafied has asked that you come and join the FAMILY Dance Event and invites you, the kids, the grandparents, aunts and uncles to dance the evening away on the street! Bring a lawn chair to take a break from the dancing!

Participating artists will have original, one of a kind, art works for sale and review. There will be food trucks available in case you have to get something to eat. Since we are so close to ABC, pop in there for an “adult beverage” to cool off with. Kids will have a special “CHALK THE STREET” section and can get their inner artist groove on. Skateboarders from GET ON BOARD will host a skater’s exhibition and you can help them by giving a donation to their campaign to help kids with Autism.

Open air, freestyle painters will also be on hand for you to witness the creative process as it happens!
Harrisburg Artist R76 will sell her “INTERACTIVE ART CARDS” for $1.00! Meet her, give her a dollar and she will hand you a card that will give you instructions as to what to do next! Find Peek to get a free balloon for the kids!

The August show at HIVE artspace is MIRROR MIRROR, featuring artists reflect on how they see themselves using traditional and non-traditional self-portraits. This group show includes 45+ artists, including many local artists and several from all over the country.

Join us on August 7 from 6-9 for the Opening Reception with craft beer tastings from The Beer Ace, channeled Tarot readings by Liette Monic, and light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. All of Royal Square will be open for First Friday, and after visiting the gallery, you can wander around the corner to Duke Street for food trucks, live music, and a special Water Wars activity in the lot next to Didi & Smiling John's!

Meisa Chase: (title) the GPS does not seem to know where the career path is so lets just take this one

I'm excited to present my work for this show. I'm doing a work with a little bit of performance, and in the spirit of a micro-installation.  I don't want to give it away; that is a pun, because my work is literally free for the taking in this show. It is important to the success of this project that you participate. So yes. My artwork will be free for the taking and I want you all to take it until its gone (please take the top image, and in order).  I only ask a small favor in return, that you write me a note. It could be a thank you, it could be a line of poetry, it could be about my work, it could be anything at all, just a nod to being present and that you have accepted my artwork gift.  There is a specific design to the project that is subtle, it is on purpose, and you may or may not understand it. If you would like to know the full story, I'll post specifics of the installation after the show is over. Its more important that you participate than understand the nuance I've designed. Be present, accept an offering of artwork, and make a note of it. Please do these things and we will be forever friends I swear!

Atlas Street Garden Mural : Circus Wheels

A "call to artists" post made me aware that a mural opportunity at the Atlas Street Garden was available.  I've not yet had too many opportunities to work outside so I was very excited to see what an outdoor mural would entail. I did some research on my painting materials, and noting this was outside in a spot, I choose to go with a water based enamel over an oil. This would both simplify my clean up and shorten my dry time. It was my lucky day at Sherwin Williams as they were having a fantastic sale on the paints I had planned to get on the day I was there. Since this mural was to be Per Gratis for the Atlas Street Garden and the community, I was grateful for the unplanned discount. I went for a simplified color scheme to both emphasize the illustration quality of the work as well as to keep my investment costs reasonable. Even if I typically enjoy working with a full color palette,  I felt this was a great situation to play with the idea of "less is more".

First the background went on. I choose a dynamic zig-zag pattern for the mural. I wanted to bring something whimsical and friendly to the garden space and neighborhood. I researched real life circus and trained animals performing on wheeled contraptions and they were my inspiration. The finished work became an animal parade (titled: Circus Wheels) with circus animals bike riding and skating.  Since the mural is in close proximity to Recycle Bicycle, I felt this was a friendly nod to that neighborhood group also. It was a pleasure being able to bring this idea to life and into the community at the Atlas Street Garden, and its my sincerest hope all who happen upon it will enjoy having this impromptu circus parade in your midst.

One of my favorite stars that inspired the mural was Jimmy, The Roller Skating Horse. Yes, there really was a roller skating horse!  Meet Jimmy.

I do feel it is important for me to note that the idea of animals being trained to perform, in the circus or otherwise, has become a hot topic of discussion of late. Some find it exploitative. I fail to understand how providing an animal with a job could be confused with a terrible life?  I am coming from a background working in animal training, most notably with horses. It stands to be my position that it is necessary for any animal living in domestic situation to have a job and/or purpose that supports keeping an active, healthy mind. All animals, and especially large intelligent animals, should have access to a life with adequate mental stimulation. Work is an acceptable stand in for what an animal would mentally have to deal with in a wild setting. Although its nice to imagine all animals as wild a free, this is not possible in our current world.  As we continue to loose available environments where animals can thrive naturally, the harder it is for them to make it in this life, too. The best we can do as their human keepers is to provide these special few animals who have found themselves in our lives with good health, plenty of love and a purpose. That is as true today as it was across history.  It is my pleasure to celebrate the amazing talents of animals and bring this rich history to the community for all to enjoy, like the circus and animals has always done!

What is Spring Forward?
Spring Forward is a celebration of community, emerging artists and fashion coming together for an evening of spring inspiration. Local and international art will be paired with models styled from downtown merchants to reflect the artists’ vision within their pieces. To do this The Parliament Arts Organization is bringing together area experts on art, fashion, and photography and collaborating with downtown merchants to produce a look book and then launching it with a great community event for the Grand-Opening of the Bond of York.
